School of Politics and International Studies

Centre for British Government

About us

The Centre for British Government was formed within the School of Politics and International Studies in 1999. The Centre's Director is Professor Kevin Theakston, and its deputy director is Dr David Seawright.

The Centre for British Government provides a focus for School of Politics and International Studies staff working and researching British government.

  • Kevin Theakston is a notable authority on central government, Whitehall and the Civil Service.
  • David Seawright is an expert on the Conservative Party, Scottish politics and MPs' attitudes towards Europe.
  • Ed Gouge works on local government.
  • Stuart McAnulla has been researching political change under the Thatcher and Major governments.

But the centre is also a network centre open to researchers that share this broad research interest in other departments, such as Law, Social Policy, History, and Communication Studies.

Our aims

The centre aims to continue the already highly-rated British government research undertaken in the School of Politics and International Studies, but also encourage inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary initiatives.

The centre's executive reflects this aim, as members include Dr Richard Whiting from the School of History, Professor Phil Taylor from Communication Studies, Professor Alan Deacon of the School of Sociology and Social Policy, and Professor Clive Walker from Law.
