Global Development and Justice research areas

Our research in these areas has developed from a nexus of empirical studies and development theories, including critical political economy, and contributes substantially to an understanding of global poverty and inequality.

Education and development

Dr Caroline Dyer co-directs the seminar series on 'Children as Educational Decision-Makers' and the ESRC project on 'Researcher Development Initiative' with the Universities of Birmingham and East Anglia.

Migration and diaspora

Current research on migration and diaspora includes Dr Zulkuf Aydin's work on Turkish migration to Cyprus and Professor Ruth Pearson's work on migrant Burmese women workers in Thailand and South Asian women workers in the UK.

Gender and development

Professor Ruth Pearson currently co-directs two further ESRC seminars on 'Work and Life in the New Global Economy' and 'International Trade and the Gendering of Work'.

Governance

Professor Gordon Crawford's current focus is on the linkage between decentralisation and poverty reduction. He is co-convenor of the Governance Working Group of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes.

Dr David Hall-Matthews has written on the link between democracy and famine prevention and corruption in Malawi.

Africa

Professor Ray Bush has recently published on coping with poverty and the environment in Egypt. He is currently researching environmental politics in Egypt and the consequences of liberalisation for poor farmers.

Asia-Pacific region

Professor Duncan McCargo's research and teaching interests include Japanese politics, and the comparative politics of Southeast Asia. He currently holds a major ESRC award to research the political role of the media in Pacific Asia.

Latin America

Dr Jelke Boesten is currently working on a research project looking at meanings of sexual violence in war and peace time Peru. Her book Intersecting Inequalities: Women and Social Policy in Peru will be published next year.

The Middle-East

Dr Zulkuf Aydin's current work examines the question of food security and de-collectivisation in the Turkic States of the ex-Soviet Union, and political change, food production and democratisation in the Middle East.

South Asia

Dr David Hall-Matthews is currently researching for a contemporary history of South Asia, focusing on how relations between India and her neighbours are changing in response to her economic success and global aspirations, and on the dangers and opportunities presented by uneven economic growth.

Professor Ray Bush has been an advisor to the Commonwealth Advisory Bureau Policy Briefing for 2011 on the issues of mining in the Global South. Ray's article an 'Alternative vision for mining' provided insight and recommendations to be discussed and developed for the Bureau.

In 2010, Dr Jelke Boesten launched her second book Intersecting Inequalities: Women and Social Policy in Peru following her research project looking at meanings of sexual violence in war and peace time Peru.

 

Professor Gordon Crawford is currently working on a research project title Human Right, Power and Civic Action with Professor Bård A. Andreassen, University of Oslo.
