About Me

I began to study Politics whilst undertaking my A-Levels, stumbling upon the subject after swapping courses. It became an instant passion of mine, heightened by the 2010 general election, which could not have come at a better time.

Why I chose to study BA Politics at Leeds

The University of Leeds was one of the first universities that I visited at open day, and initially came with the idea to study Law. However, and after meeting the staff in POLIS and spending the day at the University, it immediately became my first choice, leaping out as the right fit for me.

My Course

Studying Politics has been very exciting; it has challenged me in a variety of ways ranging from independent research to group presentation projects. A degree in Politics offers you the opportunity to learn and develop a wide set of skills that will become invaluable when you enter the job market.

My Year Abroad

In my third year I spent a year in Ankara, Turkey. Although not one of the more traditional destinations, it offered me the opportunity to test myself, learn about a culture so vastly different from my own, and also allowed me a year to pursue a more diverse set of topics. You learn a lot about yourself when you're in such a situation and I think that is what I will take from the experience more than any other. As well as finding my dissertation topic whilst studying in Ankara, I spent time with the British Embassy, IMF representatives, model-EU conferences and also represented the University internationally.

The whole experience is also one that attracts a lot of attention from employers, more so than I could have imagined. The situations that you face throughout the year will become great examples when being grilled by an interviewer; a year abroad provides you with some great anecdotes to discuss.

My year abroad is without a doubt the most employable asset that I have taken from University. It is certainly an opportunity not to miss out on and is something that will stay with you for the rest of your life. It gave me experience and knowledge that I could not have learned any other way.
