New UK Government Major Report draws on Dr Gallagher's evidence calling for a more robust approach in Iraq and Syria
On 5 February, the UK Defence Committee published a major report 'The situation in Iraq and Syria and the response to al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq al-Sham (DAESH).
The report claims that the UK can and should be, playing a greater role in the fight against DAESH (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria.
The Committee emphasised that they are not calling for combat troops to be deployed. However, the UK has the expertise, and resources to play a much larger role in analysing the DAESH threat, contributing to the plan to defeat them, supporting the Iraqi forces, and encouraging a political solution calling upon the UK to do more in Iraq and Syria. The Committee cites the influence of Dr. Adrian Gallagher who gave oral evidence to the Committee in September 2014. Gallagher outlined the legality of the options available, detailed that the crimes being committed by DAESH may constitute genocide and that President Assad of Syria is 'manifestly failing' to protect its population from genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing.
