Thailand in Turmoil

13 December 2013 |

Duncan McCargo, Professor of Southeast Asian Politics, writes for the New York Times opinion pages, discussing the role of the monarchy in Thai politics.

Professor McCargo argues that royal intervention in Thai politics has fuelled political instability. He goes on to explore the reasons why this is the case, suggesting that Thailand’s ‘network monarchy’ has at times undermined electoral democracy and infantilized the Thai population.
