Rights, Power and Civic Action

26 January 2009 |

Professor Gordon Crawford visited Nepal in December, one of the country case-studies for the 'Rights, Power and Civic Action' research project. While there he attended a rally of women's rights activists who were campaigning for land rights and against hunger and violence. This was the culmination of 16 days of women's activities around the country on these issues.

At this national rally the campaign demands were presented to the chair of the newly elected Constituent Assembly, currently drawing up a new constitution for the recently declared republic of Nepal. There were also speeches and contributions from representatives of various women's organisations as well as from Constituent Assembly members. One speaker (pictured here) was Bimal Phnuyal, Country Director of ActionAid Nepal that had supported the 16 days campaign and also an honorary visiting researcher at POLIS.
