Leeds University Centre for African Studies

Activities

The Leeds University Centre for African Studies engages in a variety of activities that promote, explore and disperse African knowledge and research within the University of Leeds.

Bulletin

Our centre publishes an annual bulletin that reports African studies activities over the previous year across all University of Leeds departments. The bulletin also carries news, updates and book reviews.

Book donation scheme

We run a book donation scheme in co-operation with the Morel Trust and publishers including James Currey, Hans Zell and Eckhard Breitinger. This programme allows higher education institutions in Africa to request academic books for their libraries, and the scheme specialises in books about the theatre arts.

Seminars and events

We organise a regular seminar programme for the Autumn and Spring semester where we invite African specialists to talk about their areas of expertise. Previous subjects have ranged from community-based theatre and political reform, to Chinese investment in Africa and the Zambian mining industry.

Sometimes LUCAS hosts graphical exhibitions with African themes for public display in the University of Leeds Parkinson Court. We also organise a conference every two years and a LUCAS annual lecture or event.

New! Africa Blog

Three PhD students in the school of history at the University of Leeds who work closely with LUCAS, Aidan Stonehouse, Vincent Hiribarren and Nicholas Grant, have set up a blog looking at contemporary and historical events in Africa as well as providing information on where to find source repositories and how to research in Africa etc. We are involving students in our department and welcome comments and contributions from students from any discipline and from people involved or interested in African affairs wherever they may be. We are hoping to get some more people involved and reading the blog and we think it is a fantastic source for students and others to keep up to date and enagage with events and stories from Africa, as well as receiving practical information. The blog address is http://perspectivesonafrica.wordpress.com/
