Behind the News: The Politics of Iran’s Nuclear Programme

Behind the News is hosting a talk about the politics of Iran’s nuclear programme by Sir Richard Dalton.

Sir Richard Dalton is an Associate Fellow of the Middle East Programme of Chatham House. He is a consultant, and a commentator on Iran, Libya and other Middle East issues for UK and overseas media.

A British career diplomat from 1970 to 2006, he had early experience in Lebanon, Jordan and Oman. From 1991-1992, he was a visiting research fellow at Chatham House and published a study on regional security architecture for the Persian Gulf region.

He was responsible for dealings with the Palestinian Authority after the Oslo Accords as Consul General in Jerusalem from 1993-1997. He returned to London as Director of Personnel at the Foreign Office in 1998, seeing through change and modernisation programmes.

In 1999, he re-established UK diplomatic relations with Libya as the first UK Ambassador to Tripoli for 17 years. He built relations of confidence with senior Libyans to promote UK political and commercial interests, helping pave the way for the 2003 breakthrough on elimination of Libya’s WMD capability.

In 2002, Sir Richard was appointed Ambassador to Iran. He played a role in European efforts to negotiate with Iran, including the 2003 - 2006 diplomatic initiatives to prevent the development of an Iranian military nuclear capability.

From 2006 to 2010, he worked with the Libyan British Business Council as Director-General. In late 2008, he co-wrote the Chatham House Middle East Programme report, “Iran: Breaking the Nuclear Deadlock”. From 2011 to date, he has Chaired Chatham House’s Round Table on Libya.

Behind the News is an issue-based discussion forum that brings university students and expert guest speakers together. Oriented towards debating current and topical issues, the aim of Behind the News is to make deliberative contributions that are policy-relevant and impact upon the world of politics.
