EC Stoner Building, Seminar Room 9.90

Leeds Centre for Democratisation Studies presents this year's seminar series: Democracy and Popular Protest. A series of talks and open discussions on the significance of political protest for democracy today. These meetings are open to all.

  • Prof. Marc Stears (University College, Oxford)

'After Blue Labour: State, Democracy and the Renewal of the Left'

The British left is going through another of its periodic ideological reassesments, drawing both on lessons from academic political philosophy and from immedate electoral politics as it does so. Much of that reassessment has turned on the relationship between society, state and market. Skepticism has grown concerning orthodox state social demcoracy and its neo-liberal alternatives, largely as a result of the inability of both to address the concerns of democratic social movements. In this talk, Marc Stears assesses recent efforts to respond to that skepticism and suggests an alternative direction in which the British left might head.
