I would like to participate in the conference, what can I do?
A participant may convene a panel of speakers, present a paper, or simply attend as a regular delegate. The fees for this are the same.

Do I have to present on a theme related to the conference theme, [Re]invasions and inventions: Latin America in the 21st Century?
No. The theme is there for those that wish to address current challenges and opportunities, but it is not obligatory. The plenary speaker will address this theme.

What are the deadlines for proposals?
The deadline for panel proposals is October 2008, and December 2008 for individual paper abstracts. The deadline for registration is 20 February 2009.

If I don’t wish to submit a panel proposal, but wish to give a paper, what should I do?
You should wait for the panels are published on the website and see which panel would be most appropriate for your topic and apply to this. If we have several high quality papers that do not fit any of the proposed panels, then we will consider putting together a panel of miscellaneous papers.

Can I give a paper in another language, not English?
Proposals and abstracts must be submitted in English. Papers can be given in Portuguese or Spanish, if specified in advance. However, it is the convenors' responsibility to give a summary of each paper at the end of each presentation, and to translate questions and answers into English. It cannot be assumed that all delegates are fluent and confident in other languages.

How will panels and papers be selected?
The organising committee will select according to clarity and quality, and also with reference to the overall balance of topics. It will not prioritise the conference theme over other unrelated themes.

Are there any grants for post graduate students?
Please refer to the SLAS website for bursaries for post-graduate presenters.

Are there any grants for travel to the UK and accommodation?
SLAS has some ‘Latin American Scholar’ grants available. Please refer to the SLAS website for more details: link http://www.slas.org.uk/grantsPrizes/laScholarsGrant.htm.

Do I need to be a member of SLAS?
You do not need to be a member to attend the conference. However, non members have to pay a supplement of £25 and students £12, which is the same as SLAS membership costs.

Do I have to pre-register?
All participants must pre-register for catering and room booking purposes.

What is included with my registration?
Registration includes entrance to all panels and attendance at all conference activities. Thursday includes a hot buffet, teas and coffees, and a wine reception and book launch. Friday includes refreshments throughout the day, a buffet lunch, welcome reception and conference dinner. All participants will also receive a conference pack. There will be publisher stands and a photo exhibition in the central meeting area. Hopefully, we will also be showing a few films, to which attendance will also be free.

What if I register, but need to drop out of the conference?
If for some reason you have to cancel your registration, please let us know as soon as possible. After the deadline for registration, we will not be able to reduce our catering costs. However, we will endeavour to refund 60% of the fee after this date, but we cannot guarantee this until we know if we have covered our costs i.e. after the conference is over. Refunds at this stage will only be made in exceptional circumstances.
