Dr Polly Wilding
Lecturer in Gender and International Development

I have been teaching at the School of Politics and International Studies since 2005 and began lecturing in Gender and Development in 2007. My PhD on gender and violence in Latin America is titled: Civil War in Disguise: Gendered Responses to Everyday Violence in Brazil.
Previous to coming to Leeds, I lived and worked in several countries, including Germany, Spain, Nicaragua and Russia. My work in these countries ranged from voluntary work for various development agencies and NGOs, to teaching English (TEFL).
I recently organised the annual conference for the Society of Latin American Studies, which was held at the University of Leeds, 26-27 March 2009. For further details see http://polis.leeds.ac.uk/slas2009.
Research Interests
My main areas of interest are gender and violence, and the linkages between urban and private violence, in the context of Latin America. I am interested how the issue of violence interacts with a range of gender issues, including poverty, social exclusion, access to services, specifically education, health and security, as well as sexuality and reproductive rights.
Teaching
I teach the undergraduate module 'Gender and Development' and the postgraduate module 'Gender, Globalisation and Development'. I also run undergraduate seminar groups for 'Development and Social Change'.
