Before coming to Leeds in 1995, I taught at the University of Wales Aberystwyth where I received my PhD and in 2002, I was senior visiting research fellow in the Department of Political Science, University of Haifa.

In 2011, I was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society.

Research Interests

The emphasis of my  research is on security identities and foreign policy across the Middle East  - with a particular focus upon Israel and the Gulf States - and how these have  shaped the process of state formation and legitimacy across the region.

As such, my work is interdisciplinary, drawing upon both archival material and more  contemporary sources and  methodologies  to understand the often complex interplay between actors – both state and non-state - that  shapes the political contours of the region.
