I joined POLIS as a Visiting Research Fellow in 2006. In 2007 I was named Research and Practice Associate of the Institute For National Security and Counterterrorism (INSCT), Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University.

In 2008, I joined the School of Public Policy, University College London, as a doctoral candidate in political science. From 2003 to 2009 I was a civilian staff officer with NATO, working at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Belgium and on operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. Prior to that I served in various Army units.

I maintain an active research and practice portfolio, and have published in a range of formats, including academic, mainstream, and social media outlets. I sit on the editorial board of the Taylor and Francis journal Civil Wars, and edit the new Hurst & Co. Publishers series Landscapes of Violence.

Research Interests

My research touches on several broad interdisciplinary themes, and draws its inspiration from aspects of law, architecture, the humanities and the social sciences.

The first is a theoretically informed and ethnographically grounded interest in political violence, with specific foci on terrorism, insurgency, and war.

The second strand deals with political communication, knowledge management, and intelligence, particularly as they relate to institutional culture and how complex organizations acquire and process information. The third strand of research deals with mechanisms of coercive statecraft – military intervention, domestic policing, judicial prosecutions and political sanctions – and violent non-state actor responses to them.
