Dr Christine Margerum Harlen
Lecturer in US Politics and International Political Economy

I am the Director of the MA programme in International Political Economy. I have a BA in History and an MA and PhD in Political Science from Northwestern University in the United States. I have been a visiting researcher at the Institute for European Studies at Cornell University. My main interests are international political economy and comparative political economy.
Research Interests
My work focuses on how industrialised countries adapt to competitive pressures. In the past, my research focused on Gerhard Schröder's attempts at economic reform. At present, I am writing a book on US federal government involvement with commercial companies, particularly the politics surrounding the government's attempts to promote competitiveness since 1980.
Teaching
I currently teach International Political Economy, Politics of Trade and Industrial Policy at MA level. I also teach United States Politics at Undergraduate level. Previously, I taught German Politics and US foreign policy.
PhD Supervision
I am keen to supervise promising research students in a range of areas, including:
- International Political Economy
- The Politics of Trade
- The Politics of Innovation and Competitiveness
- Comparative Political Economy of advanced industrialised countries
- U.S. foreign policy.
