Dr Hugh Dyer
Senior Lecturer in International Studies

My academic background is in international politics, with a theoretical disposition towards international relations and an applied interest in environmental issues.
My early studies in Canada led to a doctorate in the UK, and I taught at a range of institutions before coming to Leeds in 1991 as it established an International Studies outlet. I developed my ecological interests during an ESRC Fellowship, and these have become the focus of much of my research and teaching.
Research Interests
I have an interest in the history, development, and future of international relations theory. I have sought to approach these from a moral philosophical context, and to apply insights from ecopolitical thought to global politics by exploring concepts of environmental security, querying key actors, and assessing holistic perspectives on the international.
Teaching
My teaching relates closely to my research interests and includes 'Global Politics and the Environment' at undergraduate level one, 'Global Political Theory and the Environment' at undergraduate level three, 'International Relations of the Environment' at postgraduate level five, and other teaching and supervision for BA and MA programmes.
PhD Supervision
My research supervision encompasses a wide range of international topics including comparative security concepts among key actors, the politics of strategy and security, as well as environment and political change, with relevant area cases ranging from China, Thailand and Korea to Russia, the EU and the US.
