Dr Hannah Cross
Tutor

I teach on the undergraduate modules of 'State and Politics in Africa' and 'Globalisation'.
In 2011, I completed my PhD at the University of Leeds, titled West African Labour Mobility and EU Borders: migrant communities in Senegal, Mauritania and Spain.
Research Interests
My PhD research adopted a panoramic approach to migration between West Africa and Europe by examining different trajectories in Senegal, Mauritania and Spain. I am developing this thesis into a monograph.
My current and future research focuses on the circulation of labour between sub-Saharan and Saharan Africa, particularly with regard to the contemporary realisation of the Sahara's boundaries and the long-standing historiographical separation of the Sahara from 'Africa'. This begins with archival research relating to West African labour mobility, incorporating Mali with existing research of Senegal and Mauritania. I am also interested in regional comparisons of African migration and mobility.
Teaching
I teach on the undergraduate modules of 'State and Politics in Africa' and 'Globalisation'.
