I worked in the European Parliament as a Research Assistant to the Chair of the Environment Committee for two years before undertaking my PhD at the University of Sheffield. This experience had a major impact in shaping my research interests and offering me an insider perspective on how the EU works. After completing my thesis, I held an ESRC post-doctoral fellowship at Sheffield, then taught at the University of Aberystwyth, before commencing my fellowship in Leeds in 2005.

Research Interests

My main research interests are the European Parliament, EU Institutions and decision-making procedures and European Environmental policy. For the past few years I have been engaged in a ESRC research project with Neil Carter at the University of York, analysing the European Parliament’s environmental behaviour. The data generated from the project is also relevant to my wider research interest in EU decision-making procedures and policy outcomes.

Teaching

I teach EU politics and policy-making and Environmental politics and policy-making.

The modules I am teaching during 2011-2012 include:

  • PIED 3323 Environmental Politics and Policy in the EU
  • PIED 5508(M) Environmental Politics and Policy
  • PIED2328 Making the EU

PhD Supervision

I am currently supervising PhD students analysing the Politics of Oil Dependence in the US, and EU-Russia Energy Relations.

I am happy to supervise students interested in all aspects of EU and European politics and policy-making, and environmental politics and policy-making.
