Work Experience is a great way to find out about careers, employers and yourself.
The opportunities available to you are endless:
- 12 month integrated placement as part of your course
- A structured summer internship
- Vacation work
- Work part-time
- Shell Step
- Self created experience
- Any ad-hoc experience
As with volunteering, work experience is a good way of enhancing your employability skills and therefore making you more attractive to employers.
As you can see above, there is a multiplicity of ways to gain work experience and almost any kind will be valued by employers, though it has to be said, the more relevant the better.
However, the key to using it successfully is the way you present it on your CV or application form, so if you want help with this, you can come and use either the drop-in sessions in POLIS, or the general drop-in at the Careers Centre.
"The Internship Programme run by Democratic Services at Leeds City Council is designed to provide an opportunity for students to use their research skills in a working environment. Students are involved in researching briefing notes and providing detailed support to senior Councillors, as well as having the opportunity to work on media skills."
